Abstract
This research addressed in two caiçara communities, one at Enseada do Mar Virado, which belongs to the municipality of Ubatuba, in the Northern coast of the state of São Paulo. The second one, at Barra do Una, which belongs to the municipality of Peruíbe, in the Southern coast of the state of São Paulo. The objectives were to analyze their fishing techniques and the species of fish captured and commercialized. The research was also concerned with the local knowledge about the ecological aspects of the fishing resources. The data was collected through interviews with local fishermen and samples of the fish landings. We interviewed 26 fishermen who utilize 8 different fishing techniques catching 75 different fish species. The local ecological knowledge of the fishers was partially similar to the data from scientific literature. Based on the local fishermen's knowledge about the trophic relations it was possible to draw trophic chains. We were also able to identify fragments of similar relations between the two studied communities and differences related to the fishing activities. These differences refer to fishing techniques, explored ecosystems and captured species.
