The new industrial frontier in southeastern Goiás

ABSTRACT
Having as a reference the characterization of the Central West as an economy predominantly based on farming and cattle-raising, some isolated experiences of mineral-extraction industries and, more recently, the intensive production of monocultures, our work discusses the processes that unleash industrial growth in the region, undertaken by “modern”, high-productivity units. We attempt to show that, despite being seen in its entirety as an expanding frontier area, the Central-Western region – and, especially, the State of Goiás – presents recent transformations that, in fact, superpose an inherited spatial structure. In other words, its recent structure is marked by the legacy of an urban system and of a complex of fixed investments in the region, which occurred between 1930 and 1980, complemented by public incentives. Therefore, differently from studies that seek to understand the regional case of the Central West and each one of its States, based on a reading of the evolution of farming and cattle-raising, our work began with a spatial profile of the Southeast of Goiás, focusing on the city of Catalão, which possesses an important economic base in industry. The objective is the analysis of specificalities and points of convergence of this city’s industrial structure with the expansion of agribusiness, emphasizing and characterizing the particularities of an area that is attracting new industrial investments.
